My Students

There is nothing quite like seeing a student connect with a book or a project that resonates deeply with them and their interests. Our students have a wide range of skills and abilities, and we get to offer opportunities to unlock what's already inside of them.

Every student has a curious spirit that comes alive when given the right set of conditions.

Some find it in sitting down with a book in the reading corner, some while finding a pattern in math class, some while looking through a microscope at a cell. My middle school students are keen observers of the world around them and teach me so much everyday.

My Project

Reading can unlock so much for a student when they are engaged in the material and hooked on the story. In middle school, it's critical to provide access to stories that are accessible but also deeply meaningful. For my reading intervention class, I would like to use the young reader adaptation of Trevor Noah's Born a Crime. The text is accessible to the lowest readers in my group, but is mature enough to hold the attention of every ability level the class.

The poignant and well told stories in the book will lay the foundation for important conversations in the class around race, geo-politics, justice system and other topics that come up through the story of Trevor Noah's life.

The book is humorous, educational, well written and presents multiple opportunities to connect with the variety of experiences that my students face.
