Help me give my students a comfortable & fun learning environment while reinforcing the importance of post secondary education as they use University chairs to sit in!
Let me introduce you to my AMAZING students all 7 classes- 210 of them! All come from different backgrounds, have different disabilities, different learning styles and all need that extra boost to see that learning and reading can be fun. These 9th and 10th graders are in an inclusion setting classroom.
In the classrooms, we have a co-teach and support facilitation model.
In this model, the students receive their english education from a basic education teacher as well as an exceptional education educator who is responsible for making sure the students receive their specific classroom and testing accommodations.
We see that the students learn best when separated from a large class setting and when they are placed into smaller teaching groups led by either the basic educator or the ESE educator.
Our students have shown a greater interest in their learning when they are in smaller groups and show an excitement of reading aloud when the group is smaller then their normal large group size. We strive for our students to grasp the new material they are taught so they can perform better on tests and gain a better sense of confidence in themselves.
My Project
I work with over 210 students in their 9th and 10th English classes each day here at Anclote High School. I work IN 7 different classes and am trying to find a way to reduce the overbearing class size and noise distractions that effect my students. I have been pulling students from groups of 5-15 in smaller groups and we often sit outside of the classroom in a quiet place to get our reading and class work done. Students often sit in classroom chairs or opt to sit on the cold, hard concrete floor when they come to my small reading groups. I'd like to change this and offer a more comfortable alternative.
I came up with the idea of "Reading & Relaxing".
Students can come out and expect to be comfortable as they learn. The seating would be compact and easy to fit and store into a close by closet at school when not being used. I was pretty specific when choosing the seating. Our school is big on promoting a secondary education post high school and our staff promotes colleges from all over the country on the first Wednesday of the month when all staff are encouraged to wear their college gear. I'd like to expand on this by including our college theme into the "Reading & Relaxing" plan. I am looking to have chairs with our state of Florida's college logos on them.
I found some at DICKS sporting goods and plan to incorporate some of our well known universities including Florida State University, The university of South Florida, The University of Miami and yes, even my college's rival- The University of Florida.
What better way to get our students prepared for higher learning then through additional educational supports, small group instruction and a comfortable setting.
