Help me give my students appropriate reading level materials to use as the learn and practice English. Please help supply headphones so that they can listen native English speakers and hear their own recordings!
I teach English language arts to students who are learning English (ESOL students). My students are level 1 ESOL students. Most of them are brand new to the United States and are coming to school in America for the first time. Many come with little to no English skills. Some have been unable to attend school in their home country. My students are balancing school, learning a new language and culture, and supporting their families with part time jobs.
An important component of teaching is ensuring that students feel supported and are equipped with necessary materials.
I would like to request funds so that I can purchase a class set of headphones with microphones for English listening and speaking practice. I would also like to purchase hi-lo books (high interest, low reading level) to use within the class. It is difficult to use the typical books found within a high school classroom because my students are so new to English and therefore their reading level is much lower. Lastly, I like to provide flexible seating within my classroom. I encourage collaboration and would like to provide stools or chairs that can be easily moved and arranged around the classroom.
My Project
My students want to be successful in English. They want the skills and confidence necessary for communicating in a new language. Reading materials bought through Donors Choose would provide reading instruction and practice for students. Materials at the appropriate reading level are difficult to find but with the Scholastic magazines, my classroom will be much better equipped to help them learn.
Learning a language takes practice, practice, practice!
The headphone set will be used to enable students time listening to audio books in English. They will also allow my students to speak and record themselves for self-assessment and speaking practice in an environment where they do not feel intimidated.
