Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach art in a public elementary school in the New Orleans area. Our library is in desperate need of some interesting good quality art books for our students. Right now the few art related books that we have are outdated and in bad shape. Most of them are the "how to draw" type, which do not provide students with much food for thought.
I would like for us to have the "Come Look With Me" series by Gladys S. Blizzard. She was a former art teacher and museum curator of education, and has written an excellent series that can be read individually or by an entire classroom. These books have good quality art reproductions as well as thought provoking questions.
Each book is centered around a theme that is age appropriate for elementary students and relevant to the curriculum. These books will give the children exposure to the works of great artists and will show them how and why art is made. They will help provide a link with art and the rest of the curriculum. Thank you.
