What? I have to read AGAIN? That is what I face each day when it comes to reading with my ESL students. They struggle with reading so they don't want to read. I need materials that I can use to engage them in reading.
My students are all at-risk struggling readers.
They struggle because they are all English as a Second Language students, and they don't always understand the English language. My students are from China, Pakistan, Russia, and Mexico. They really try hard when it comes to learning, but they have the language obstacle to overcome. My students face many obstacles during the school day, and anything I can do to improve their skills will benefit them a great deal. They want to learn, but they don't have the materials to practice reading at home.
My Project
The Nook readers that we received from another DonorsChoose project help my students become interested in reading. My goal is to have these students improve their reading skills by two grade levels by the end of the year. We are requesting gift cards to purchase ebooks to add to our Nooks. Some of the ebooks are Among the Hidden, Holocaust and Princess, and historical fiction books. The ebooks will allow the students to use the Nooks that I have for the students from a previous project, and they will be able to take the Nooks home to read. If the student doesn't know how to pronounce a word it will pronounce it for them. My students will develop a love for reading, and they will also improve their social skills as well. The new ebooks will also help raise their self-esteem when it comes to academic vocabulary. Since these students all struggle with reading, anything I can do to improve their scores will improve their lives. If I can hook the students with new ebooks I will create life long learners.

We are trying everything we can to get these students learning English so they can survive at school and in America. You will be helping us with our goals. You will be helping make life long English learners out of these eager students.
