I teach children with varying exceptionalities such as specific learning disabilities, autism, vision impairment, and cerebral palsy. My students are at least two grade levels behind their same-age peers.
We are a Title I school which means many of the children come from impoverished backgrounds.
They have parents who have many challenges. Many students are part of the Hunger Project which helps feed them on weekends.
In my room, the students are able to work on their level and at the pace they need. We are trying to ensure that they get the most out of their education.
My Project
Many of my students are from very high poverty homes where food is not abundant. The students come to school hungry and still complain of hunger even after a school breakfast.
We are unable to get any schoolwork done when the students are focused on food and not lessons.
We have built-in a morning snack that allows the children to have a short break and eat something that will tide them over until lunch. The students sit on the carpet while I read them the story from the textbook, or a library book one of the students has checked out. We supply the food that they eat since only one or two students can afford to bring a snack to school. We are trying to get assistance with the high cost of this endeavor by asking for donations of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, Veggie Straws and Keebler Sugar Wafer cookies. The students prefer these treats and will be excited to work in the morning to earn these snacks.
