Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a Title I school district in San Jose where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, it can often feel like our school goes unseen in the midst of Silicon Valley. Issues of equity and opportunity are part of our everyday reality at our school.
My students enter our classroom at a critical point in their educational journeys: the step right before high school.
They are full of energy and inquiry, ready to question the world around them and make their voices heard. Our classroom is a school family that works together to create a learning space where everyone shares a sense of belonging and purpose. Given the support and resources, my students will explore and understand the histories, systems, and experiences that make up their world. This understanding and awareness is a strength my students will take with them as they leave middle school.
My Project
This spring my students will complete a project based learning unit on resilience incorporating elements of literary analysis, writing, and digital storytelling. My students will use the memoir, Warriors Don't Cry, and support texts to explore Melba Pattillo Beals' experience as part of the Little Rock Nine. The books will form the foundation for small group discussions and Socratic Seminars.
Students will read the texts as they work towards answering the driving question: What can we learn from other people’s inspiring stories of resilience that we might be able to use in our own lives?
In the process of answering this question students will be able to practice key literary analysis skills they will need in high school as well as connect their learning in the classroom to their own lived experiences. The stories of the Little Rock Nine provide powerful examples of the incredible strength and potential of young people who are determined to make a difference.
