Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of twenty-four first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime in the nation. All students at my school site receive a free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places in which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
My Project
These Spanish books and CDs will be used during reading workshop. Three students at a time will be able to use the listening center. At the listening center, students will read along using the books. Students will learn the skill of listening and practice reading (because these books are at their levels). This will happen while the rest of the students read their books at their desks independently.
Give my students the opportunity to read along from a variety of Spanish books at the listening center that are at their reading level.
Allow my students to be immersed in reading while feeling entertained and engaged.
