Reading Allows Students To Be Forever Free

My students need books that expose them to life outside of a refinery town. Books that open windows that allow them to travel the world, but that are also relevant for this time.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a reflection of me because I am a part of the district that I began my educational journey, and it represents the beauty that can be found in this small town. When you grow up surrounded by refineries and construction jobs, you begin to believe that is all you are capable of. Students in my district range from poverty to middle class, and their goals are what their parent's goals were: to just finish school and become a welder or operator. However, when students enter my classroom everyone is equal no matter their economic background, race, or orientation. They learn that if you want it and are willing to work hard for a goal it is attainable.

The students in my classroom have been placed in a box, and I am helping them break free of the cage that surrounds them.

While most of my students families work at the plants, they have jobs themselves or siblings they must care for. To them college is not an option, so school is not always taken seriously. Students learn that the road that has been journeyed the least sometimes offers the biggest rewards.

My Project

I teach a diverse group of students who need more opportunities to read books with characters that look like them. They need an opportunity to see themselves in characters so that they can be able to truly connect with a piece. Books with Latino characters, Asian characters, African-American characters, female characters, etc. I teach a diverse group of kids, Pre-AP to remediation, and one of my goals is to make sure my students have the chance to read more because they have a wide selection of books to choose from.

One issue that I have noticed is that reading comprehension is low with students because they don’t read, and they don’t read because they can’t relate.

I want to change that stigma in my classroom by creating a diverse library selection. If my classroom were adopted, I would create a diverse classroom of library with an array of books that would entice each and every student to read. The amount of books would increase the volume of books my students have access too, which allows them to find books that they would enjoy.
