Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need access to a wide array of different kinds of books in our classroom. They have access to a limited number of books at home and need to be exposed to as many different kinds of books as possible. Biographies and legends are two such genres which would help our classroom library.

My students attend a Title 1 low-income school.

The majority of my students are English language learners and need a wide array of reading opportunities in the classroom. Many of my students are struggling readers and need the opportunity to read books that are slightly less challenging than "grade level" textbooks so that they can improve and advance in their reading achievement. They are eager learners and would love to research important and relevant topics.

My Project

I have requested two different kinds of genres for the classroom. I am requesting a classroom library of biographies of "heroes" who have truly made a difference in the lives of others. We study Rosa Parks in our reading anthology and our first theme of the year is Risks and Consequences. Rosa Parks exemplifies someone who took a risk in her life and created a thunderstorm of consequences that truly effected many others. I would like my students to research others like her and be inspired to take similar risks (however big or small) to be leaders in their own lives and help others as a result. Fourth graders learn to write informational reports and writing a report on a "hero" is the purpose of this project. On another note, fourth graders also learn about imaginative literature and study legends. Having access to a great collection of legends give the students a wonderful opportunity to truly understand the genre and enjoy the many beautiful legends that have been written.

An expanded classroom library is so critical to helping improve the reading skills of my students.

They are eager to read and simply need access to solid instruction plus quality books in the classroom library. Expanding our library by including biographies and legends will give my students diverse reading and research writing opportunities. Your support will truly make a difference in allowing my students to enjoy great books.
