Reading: A Family Affair

My Students

My first graders are becoming readers and need practice at home. Many families are very busy and reading time is limited. These kits will provide opportunities for families to read together and complete a variety of activities related to each story.

I teach in a high poverty school.

Two years ago my class was an additional section; therefore, I entered a classroom with few instructional materials. With ongoing budget cuts, it is difficult to find funding for additional projects like this one. My class is a very diverse group of children. They have lots of energy and enjoy learning new things. My class consists of one student receiving special education services, two students in the English Language Learning program, one in speech and language, and one diabetic student. Even with all of these needs, one need is similar in ALL my students... a need to spend quality time with their families.

My Project

My students will be reading with their families every week! This time spent together is important because it will help build their relationship. It also shows the children that their parents value education. Parents will have age appropriate materials to use with their children. Since the 16 kits include books and activity cards, parents will know exactly what to do to help reinforce reading skills. It is my hope that families will look forward to getting a new kit the next week!

This project is SO important.

It helps build the relationships between my students and their families. It also will help improve the reading abilities of my students. Hopefully by getting parents involved in their child's education at an early age, they will stay involved! I'm so excited by the potential this project has for my students!
