My students are incredibly eager, empathetic, young activists who come various ethnic backgrounds. The students who come into my classroom and both ready to learn and show great interest in increasing their knowledge about social issues and activism through reading.
In our classroom, we have talked about topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement, ethnic studies, LGBTQ history and immigration.
My students identify as Black, Latino, African and Asian America. We need reading materials that they can see themselves in.
My Project
I have been passed down my classroom library from other teachers who have been in this classroom and although it has many books, most of the books are torn, old and not relevant to the my students' lives and interests. All of my students are active readers who make connections from themes in their books to relevant social events in the world, so they need material that matches their growing brains.
I want to make sure my students have the tools to be both engaged and informed students and citizens as they grow into a world that is changing everyday.
Our students will be using this relevant reading material to supplement their independent reading work that is based on Columbia University's Teacher's College curriculum. This curriculum focuses on being responsive towards students' interests, reading levels and various books rather than focusing on one classroom novel.
