This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I school in a high poverty area of Rocky Mount, NC. All of our students receive free lunch and help from other community resources. Our students often live in environments that are not warm and welcoming due to circumstances beyond their control. My students live in conditions that are dictated by the poverty in their lives. They look to school as being their safe place, the place they can be comfortable and accepted. It is their home in many circumstances.
My Project
My students live in a small town in Eastern North Carolina and are sheltered from the great world around them. Scholastic News would be one way to bring the greater world closer to home. The students will learn about the greater world around them as they read about current events in not only the United States but worldwide.
Scholastic News will also provide my students the opportunity to learn critical thinking skills as they evaluate current events happening in our world.
They can use what they have learned through Scholastic Weekly reader to delve further into current events that they want to learn more about through internet searches and meaningful dialogue with peers and teachers within the school.
