Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a Title I elementary school and my class is filled with bright, kind, and energetic learners. Many of my students are the children of immigrants and some are immigrants themselves. My students are special because of the diverse cultures, languages, and backgrounds they bring with them into the classroom.
I'm impressed every day by my students' growth mindsets and the grit they show when facing problems in and out of the classroom.
Their curiosity is contagious! My students love to talk, sing, build, and play while exploring and learning new ideas. Most importantly they love to read!
My Project
Dr. Seuss said, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” This idea that books can transport and transform you from where you are to where you’d like to be is why it’s so important for children to have access to quality literature at a young age. I want to inspire each of my students to truly love learning and reading. First grade is such a crucial time because students are learning to read so they can read to learn for the rest of their lives.
My goal is to purchase vibrant and inclusive fiction and nonfiction books for my classroom that will encourage my students to think and inspire them to act.
The books I’ve chosen celebrate the beautiful and diverse colors and cultures that make up our classroom, city, country, and world. These inclusive books teach tolerance and compassion with characters that look, feel, and act like my students. They tell stories of proud and persistent females that stand tall in the face of adversity. Stories are told of strong, intelligent boys and men that face injustice and use words to change their world for the better. My students will get to read books about children with disabilities to help them better understand their differences and teach how to value them. With your help, we can purchase books that will change the lives of the students that read them. Thank you for being a part of our classroom!
