I have 29 students in my Kindergarten classroom. These five/six year olds are compassionate, curious, and eager to learn. This year, they will master the sounds of the alphabet, learn how to count past 100, and build a strong foundation to a life-long career as readers.
The student population at my Title I school is 97% Mexican American with 42% of students having limited English proficiency.
My students are surrounded by a loving and supportive community of family and friends. I'm focused on creating an equally loving and supportive classroom of critical thinkers and caring minds.
My Kindergarteners LOVE to read! They get excited about literature and can't wait for the time every week where they get to rifle through my books bins in a process we call "book shopping." The problem? The topics that they are so interested in often don't appear in common beginner guided reading texts, meaning their "reading books" don't often match up with their "choice books." My students gravitate toward exciting nonfiction like sharks, dinosaurs, and extreme weather. They want to dig into texts about their favorite pop culture like Paw Patrol, Marvel, and Frozen. Lists of popular Kindergarten topics are long and ever-changing, and I believe I should adapt to these interests.
When noticing that my students were focusing on only a few of their book baggie texts (the ones with the dinosaurs, superheroes, and ballerinas), I realized that our library needs more books that represent my student's interests while simultaneously being level appropriate.
The books in this Donor's Choose are Level 1 or below, meaning that they have less text on each page and use high frequency words and repetition. These texts will be helpful for all levels in my kindergarten classroom, meeting most of my students where they are at, rather than presenting an overwhelming amount of undigestible text. They will simultaneously grab my students' interest with engaging topics and familiar illustrations.
