My students need a listening center, with a portable CD player and audio books to increase fluency. My students also need independent reading centers, storage, and books to improve comprehension and fluency.
Do you remember reading letter by letter? Word by word? My students need resources to help their fluency. Without fluency, they cannot remember or comprehend the text. I hope these listening centers push their fluency to the next level and in that, their comprehension will also excel.
My second graders come from diverse backgrounds.
Our school has students from multiple social economic backgrounds as well. The students are eager to learn and at this point in the year need some new ways of doing so. Some of my students struggle with independent reading activities and need constant small group work. Having a new listening center, with head phones that work and new activities, will give my students a fun and productive way to practice independent reading.
My Project
Having the new listening center, and the accessories that come with it, will give my second graders opportunities to practice fluency, comprehension, and independent reading. Although I would love to have my struggling readers in a small group constantly, that is not possible with other students in the class. The centers and listening activities will give all of my students, especially those who need a little extra, a chance to practice all of the necessary techniques and strategies on their own while I meet with the students in small group. My advanced reader's will benefit from the non-fiction texts and also from hearing fluent reading. My advanced readers try to read too fast and my struggling readers need to read faster. These activities will help both groups of students and will be fun and exciting to them.
This project is important to our classroom because children must be good readers to be successful in school.
Without reading, the students will struggle in every subject. Third grade is approaching quickly for my students and they need to feel confident when getting there. In third grade my students will be reading on their own much more than they do now in second grade. This is the best time of year to build up their fluency and comprehension to instill a lifelong love of reading.
