Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning my students come to school ready and willing to learn. My students love to read and can sit and read for hours if I let them! As of today, my students are about one year behind in reading fluency and comprehension, and by June we plan to make a year's growth in reading comprehension!
Our class is in desperate need of books.
I teach 54 wonderful 5th grade students. Their abilities range from a second grade reading level to a sixth grade and higher reading level. My students love to read; however, with a limited variety of books this can be challenging at times.
My school is a Title I school in Las Vegas. The majority of my students come from poverty, Nearly all of them receive free breakfast and lunch daily. The school has a 60% English Language Learner population, and many live in a home where no English is spoken.
My Project
With these books, my students will be able to make the necessary growth to be better prepared for sixth grade. These books will allow students to reach their goals in our Reading Rangers program. Each student is on a unique level and has a certain amount of books they must read and pass quizzes on. This level is based on their independent reading ability. These books will not only help students graduate their level, but they will help them become better readers.
Students will be able to check out these books and take them home each night to read, and the more my students read the better they do in all subjects in school. Reading is the key to success!
Right now, my classroom library is limited.
Many days, my students have to go to another class or go to the local library to choose a book that is right for them, and often times getting to the local library is impossible for them. These books will allow students to be able to pick out books each day for themselves in my room. They will also help my students improve their fluency and comprehension which is absolutely essential to their success in middle school and high school.
