My students need more books! Our classroom is lacking in non-fiction and lower level 'I Can Read' books that will help students be successful throughout the curriculum.
Every morning I am at the door with a smile on my face ready to greet my students. There is no better way to start the day than with a smile, hug, handshake, or fist bump from every child.
My students are compassionate and hardworking.
They care about each other and recognize that there is a wide range of needs and abilities in our classroom.
My students are full of excitement and energy. They have a thirst for knowledge and complain when it is time to switch from one subject to the next because they don't want to stop!
My Project
Our district has recently adopted Lucy Calkins' Units of Study for Reading. Each unit has a specific focus with targeted skills and strategies surrounding one type of genre. Their favorite one so far has been the mystery unit. Below level readers will be able to enjoy this unit more with added books like "Nate the Great."
The best part is that my students love reading now!
They are also using the terminology that comes right from the Units of Study. They are consuming more books than they ever have in the past and unfortunately our classroom library is suffering. There just aren't nearly enough books for each genre.
My students thrive off facts! They love telling me about what they have read or why someone was famous. The additional non-fiction books and biographies will continue to drive their curiosity.
