My Students

We have many different personalities, interests, and needs in our classroom! My students come from diverse backgrounds: over 40% of our families are of Latino, African-American, Asian-American, or Russian descent. In addition, 73% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students are passion chasers, energy fountains, social justice warriors, critical thinkers, artists, readers, writers, mathematicians, chess players, avid trailblazers, athletes, and more.

My students are also growing into avid readers focused on finding stories that not only speak to their experiences, but also introduce them to new experiences, and these novels cover the wide range of emotions and perspectives of our classroom.

As typical with most 8th grade classrooms, we are a community of many different levels. Some students are reading 110,000 word novels with complex language and concepts. Some students are reading 5,000 word graphic novels. We know that in order for students to improve their reading ability, they need to read relevant stories within their Lexile range.

Not only will diverse books help students develop empathy and allow them to decompress and de-stress, they will also help all of them become better readers, no matter what level they are at right now.

My Project

My students this year love to read. They devour everything from graphic novels to books filled with dragons and sorcerers to realistic fiction about love, life, death, struggles, and triumphs. I have many students who read 0 books all last year and are already on their fifth book of this year. We want to stack our library full of great novels featuring diverse protagonists from many different backgrounds. With these novels in this DonorsChoose.org, there is a little bit for everyone, which will help all of my students reach their year-long goal, and maybe even inspire them to be a part of our school's 1 Million Word Club!
