Help me give my students engaging books to rebuild our collection after tornado damage and to give them the opportunity to participate in a state-wide reading program.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a public Montessori magnet school. Parents, who choose to apply to our program, want a Montessori education for their children but cannot afford a private option.
My students are active, engaged, curious, and excited about learning.
They are also very diverse. Our student population is diverse, approximately 70% African American, 10% white, a growing Hispanic population, and immigrants from Africa and the Middle East. Our students also come from a diverse socioeconomic background, with over 60% qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
With less than 300 students, our parent teacher association is small but active. The organization supports the teachers and students as it can by providing monetary support for classroom materials and hosting cultural events but its funds are limited. Our parents give greatly through their time, however, and many volunteer in the classroom, library, or other areas of the school.
My Project
Each year, our state sponsors the North Carolina Children's Book Award. The books are nominated by children and the award winner is chosen by children. The books on the list are fun and engaging and our students want to be able to read them and vote for their favorite.
Most of our library fiction collection was damaged after a tornado struck our school last spring.
Our students love reading engaging picture books but there are not that many left on the library shelves. We need the books on the North Carolina Children's Book Award list so we can add more fun picture books back into our library and our students can take part in this valuable reading program.
