This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? I know that To Kill A Mockingbird will be one of these books for my students.

My students are learning to value reading more and more, everyday.

Here is some information about our school demographics: 90% of our students are first-generation college bound, 80% of our students are economically disadvantaged 95% of our students are Hispanic or African American, and most students enter our school at least one grade level behind in math and reading.

My Project

We will use this book as our class novel for our upcoming unit. We will discuss the injustices that existed in the past, and continue to exist today. We will use this book in class everyday, as well as for assignments at home. Students will be placed into book clubs to ensure the development of discussion skills.

This project is critical to my students' success.

I know that they will read more if they fall in love with literature with the help of novels such as To Kill A Mockingbird. Growing my classroom library guarantees my students success in 8th grade ELA, as well as their other academic subjects. By providing my students with the tools to become lifelong readers, I am providing a critical foundation for success in school and the real world.
