In order to learn to love to read, you have to read what you love! It's imperative that students get the opportunity to get their hands on texts that will spark their interest so that they can learn to read in texts they love.
My students are in grades 6 - 8 in an Urban Title 1 school.
Many of the students in the school are considered part of the district's lowest third in terms of reading proficiency. The school is implementing a new and exciting reading program that has had much success. We are looking to provide our students with texts they will love in order to inspire a love of reading.
My Project
Many of the students leave elementary school never completing a book on their own! They are told that they need to love reading and they try to love reading but rarely are they given the resources they need to do just that. These magazine subscriptions will help to provide students with interesting and compelling texts that also are covering some of the most current and relevant news stories.
Reading from these magazines in small groups will allow students an entry into reading complex texts with high levels of success.
These magazines also offer the students an opportunity to read about events and news that will broaden their understandings of the world in which they reside. There is no better way to learn how to read than to read to learn.
