My Students
3rd Grade Has S.W. A. G (Students With Academic Greatness).
I teach on the Westside of Chicago in a high poverty area.
My class is comprised of 20 amazing 3rd grade students with varying academic abilities. Their levels range from “exceeds” expectations to “academic warning”. Every day I work to the best of my ability to ensure that all my students receive the quality instruction that they deserve to increase their knowledge in reading.
My Project
My students need a variety of text that is rich in content, promotes higher order thinking skills, and exposes them to different genres. Having access to these resources will help increase their scores on benchmark and standardized assessments.
Currently, I have one class set of novels for my students to learn form. I noticed that they were much more responsive and engaged when we participated in the novel study than they are when we just use basal readers. Participating in that novel study helped increase my students’ critical thinking skills. They were able to explain character traits more thoroughly and find textual evidence to support their answers. Having more class sets of novels for novel study will not only increase critical thinking skills, it will increase the level of rigor with regard to reading as well.
I know having more novels can motivate my students to think outside the box and go deeper in the text, which is required by the Common Core Standards.
Also, having leveled readers and more centers can motivate my Tier 2 students to strive toward improvements in fluency and comprehension skills. Having leveled readers will allow the students to read a book at their Lexile level without getting frustrated.
