I work in a Title I school where 70% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Several of them come to school ready to just be loved and shown that you care for them. They will work so hard just for attention and talk time.
I strive to make my class feel more like a family and help them learn to come together as a team.
It is so rewarding to watch how excited they get when they are able to help one of their brothers or sisters through one of their problems.
My Project
I have been blessed with a class that loves to read books. I have some students that would read all day long if they were allowed to. The problem that we are having is that most of my classroom library is filled with short picture books that they can read quickly.
These chapter books will help me fill some shelves with longer, more engaging books that will keep my students wanting to read.
All I hear about everytime we go to the library is about Dog Man, Captain Underpants, Dork Diaries, or Diary of the Wimpy Kid. It is always a sad day when we go and the book that they were wanting in any of those series is checked out. Having these books in our classroom will not only help my students have more to read, but it will give them more of a chance to be able to get it when they are ready to read it.
