I teach a great group of third graders! They are diverse in culture, ethnicity, and personalities. They learn so much from each other just by listening and sharing.
Their open minds warm my heart.
But, they do have their share of hardships and worries. Many students do not come in with enough supplies, but do come in with worries. Even with all that is happening around them, they still manage to come to school with a huge smile. It is my job to let them know they can bridge the gap between what they have and what they can become.
My Project
One day I read a book to my class that wasn't the normal "comic" style novel (which is what my students always beg for). Instead, I pulled out a picture book about women who changed America. My students sighed. But when the story was over, every student clapped and told me how much they loved it! That book hasn't been on a shelf since! Everyday another student takes it to read it.
Ever since then, I knew our school's diversity should be mirrored in the classroom library.
A portion of my students speak Spanish at home. Stories like “Love and Roast Chicken” and “My Name is Celia/Me llamo Celia” will be relevant for those students. I also do not have many stories in my library with inspiring minorities through history. Books like “Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History” and “Malala: A Hero for All” will show my students there are more people to look up to other than the past presidents. I want my students to be able to see themselves in the books they read!
