I teach 5th Grade at GWBE in Stockton, CA. It is a title one school. Stockton is lowest in literacy rate in big towns in our country. I have 30 students in my class.
This is one of the most amazing group of students a teacher can ask for.
The eagerness to learn, help each other and, cooperate with me in any way possible has just blown my mind.
We have a new reading program that lends itself to time in class and at home for students to pick a book of their choice. As a teacher, my first priority is to give to my students high - interest books on topics that they really enjoy reading about.
The first day of school I had put books in baskets to students to choose from for their independent reading time. I asked them to make two piles of books, one they like to read and second they don't like so much. To my surprise, two- thirds of the books went in a pile that they did not like. I promised them that I will be adding new books soon.
My Project
As a teacher, my first priority is to give my students high - interest books on topics that they really enjoy reading about. Currently, I want my students to engage in current affairs.
I would like my students to get Scholastic News to keep updated on current events.
Scholastic News will give us a tool to read about current events and up to date on events around the world.
Scholastic News has articles on current events and followup activities to check for understanding. Any gaps in the materials will be filled by teacher-led input and instruction.
I plan to use scholastic news magazine as an extension of our social studies curriculum. We will be spending 20 to 30 minutes, twice a week to read the magazine and do the follow-up activities.
