Our 5th grade reading class is full of eager, developing readers who are beginning to look critically at the world around them. Over the last year, our inclusive Diverse Learners/English Language Learners reading class has explored many ways in which their community shapes who they are as ten year olds.
We are now going to look at the ways in which the students can shape their community by reading a variety of novels whose protagonist stands up for something they believe in.
By having a class set of the novel Frindle by Andrew Clements, the students will be able to have their own copy to take to and from school. This will encourage their active engagement, ownership, and participation in class. At the same time, we are trying to change our students' perception that reading only happens in an academic setting. With your support, students will be able to take home a copy of the book to share with their family. This will also increase family engagement with our classroom content. We will communicate our objectives with families so they can support their growing learners at home.
