Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love teaching 20 curious bilingual kindergarten students. They are full of life, love and happiness! My students come to school so eager to learn and work. Our school is a Title I school which has grades Pre-k through 5th, and all of our students are eligible to participate in the free lunch program. The majority of my students do not have any books at home to read or to be read to before starting school. Therefore, they are lacking many pre-literacy fundamentals such as vocabulary and language development. Therefore, I have embarked on a mission to provide my wonderful at risk ESL students to become the leaders I know they are by enhancing their literacy skills and with as many books as possible.
My Project
I am requesting more dual language books for my kinder students. I want to read to my ESL kinder students each day as part of our language experience. Read alouds are a great way for my bilingual students to become familiar with the English language. They will have the opportunity to hear sounds of letters and words. They will learn about different characters and settings. They will learn and expand their vocabulary through daily read alouds, reading to self and partner reading during our Daily Five. I truly believe my students need to be surrounded by books to enhance their language and learning development. Books will allow them to explore all the great literature of books and provide them with wonderful experiences vicariously through books.
