Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so lucky to have such a motivated eighth grade class and I want to expose them to as much as possible. Despite a dangerous neighborhood and a lack of parental involvement, they come to school every day with great attitudes, eager to learn.
Theodore Roosevelt said, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." We manage to do a lot with a little in our 8th grade classroom, but imagine what we could do with a little more.
We need to increase our reading lexiles this year in order to get ready to move forward towards college and careers.
We are in the heart of the inner city.
One hundred percent of our overcrowded classroom is entitled to free breakfast and lunch. Our classroom composition is diverse, except for the fact that 75% of my eager learners are in need of urgent literacy intervention.
My Project
I have been the lucky recipient of several Donors Choose projects. I always request novels, because we have so few high-interest novel sets at our school. I had to move classrooms last June. I made sure to label my materials very carefully, but somehow they were thrown away over the summer. Now I have nothing.
I have some brilliant students applying to excellent high schools, and they need to be exposed to the same high quality texts that students are reading in more affluent districts.
The novel "Milkweed" by Jerry Spinelli will help me do this.
Through literature circles, my students will be able to engage in thought provoking conversations that will help them be prepared for their interviews. Please help me help them.
