Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing; my students are silly; my students are smart; and my students want to learn more! My students are all special education students with a variety of learning, behavioral, and emotional disabilities who attend a school in a high-need community on the northwest side of Chicago.
Despite the challenges they face both inside and outside the classroom, my students all want to learn and work hard every single day.
However, my students often do not have the resources they need to be the most successful. These students already have so many factors working against them; lack of resources should not be one of them. Being in the special education classroom for part of the day actually means they have fewer resources that their typically developing peers have, as resources often go to the general education classrooms first. Therefore, students with the highest needs often have the fewest resources, especially materials that are at their level and accessible to them. My students are amazing and have made great strides despite this lack of resources, but I can only imagine the successful young men and women they will become with the resources necessary to help them achieve.
My Project
My classroom library is filled with books. Books I have bought, books I have collected, and books that have been donated. Throughout the school year, I have continued to introduce new books to my classroom library, and each time my students cannot wait to begin reading them. However, while the collection is much stronger now than it was when I started teaching, it is still lacking a solid assortment of books from the beginning reading levels, particularly books that are age-appropriate and high interest to struggling readers in upper elementary school. As many teachers will attest, interesting book series are often an effective way to "hook" reluctant readers.
As a teacher, especially as a special education teacher, it is my job to foster a love of reading in my struggling readers.
Through intensive phonics instruction paired with fun read-alouds and time for independent and guided reading, even my most struggling, resistant readers are beginning to discover the other worlds that books can open. However, in order to continue to foster their love of reading, which will lead to additional practice reading and future success in a world where reading is necessary, I need a wider selection of books that my students are able to and want to read. I particularly like the Ordinary People Change the World Series because not only are these books high interest, but they also inspire my students to be leaders and change their own world.
