Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Books provide the pathways to adventure, fantasy, and imagination. Students with special needs frequently struggle with reading due to various processing deficits. Giving them access to books they can read at their individual levels helps them progress and develop a love for reading.

Many of my students are second language learners from low income households.

They all have learning disabilities and are challenged in the area of language arts. My students read at two or more grade levels below their peers due to processing deficits. Many of them avoid reading because it is so challenging and time consuming. They love being read to and demonstrate imaginative thinking in creating their own stories. I would like to see them develop stronger reading skills and experience reading for enjoyment.

My Project

Reading fluently and comprehending at grade level are vital to students' learning in all subject areas. Lower reading levels impact students' access to the curriculum. My students need 10 leveled readers sets to improve reading fluency and comprehension by accessing books at their instructional reading levels. Leveled fiction and nonfiction readers will allow my students to read books at their instructional level. This will lead to less frustration, increased fluency, and better comprehension skills. Having a variety of leveled books in my classroom, gives my students more literacy choices at the lower reading levels. Given these books, my students can experience the joy of reading for learning and fun!

Leveled reading books will give my students more choices of literature at their instructional level.

They participate in Accelerated Reader, but are limited by the number of books available at the lower levels. My students are motivated to read when given books they can read independently. Providing them with these books will improve fluency and comprehension skills. They will be more motivated to read at home for pleasure.
