"Heads you read, tails you write." --Lester Laminack
We want our readers to be writers too.
Our school has been focused on reading achievement, but we know that incorporating authentic writing opportunities is beneficial as well. Students will be inspired and guided through in their literacy instruction if they have great books in their hands. It gives me great joy to celebrate our students as readers AND writers!
Our school is a public, suburban school with a diverse student population in a rapidly growing community. We believe that each child should have opportunities to progress academically and socially through a challenging instructional environment that allows collaboration with their peers. Their reading should be based on choices that inspire them to share in a supportive community of readers.
My Project
Students do better when their reading and writing instruction is reciprocal especially since our literacy instruction utilizes a workshop model. Teachers can use these books again and again throughout the writing process to model and remind students to tune in to the many valuable qualities found in published works.
Students can be inspired and guided as writers simply by reading books that they love.
Offering high quality books to our students can help them as they navigate current academic writing demands as well as creative writing for their personal enjoyment. This simple flip of reading and writing will use our time and energy more effectively to help our students grow in literacy.
