This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My pre-k students are eager to learn and experience school. However, the odds are stacked against them. They are growing up in poverty in a violent neighborhood. My students at 4 and 5 years old deal with situations most adults will never have to deal with in their lifetime. 100% of the students at my school receive free or reduced priced lunch. Many of them are performing below grade level. Despite gains this past year, academic performance is still a struggle. They have to deal with hardship after hardship inside and outside of school yet, they are some of the most resilient and passionate kids you will ever meet. These kids have a place in my heart because of their unconditional love for learning. I am determined to make our time together more meaningful than ever and I refuse to let our lack of access to resources hold us back.
My Project
My eager Pre-k students are in need of more activities to build their English Language skills. The interactive reading books will help support all my students from the English language learners, students with special needs and their peers. They will be able to use the books independently during workstation time. I can use the books to differentiate small group instruction to work and meet the language needs of all my students.
All while gaining and perfecting their primary reading skills.
This will also provide my ESE and ESOL students an engaging way to learn to read. Giving them an engaging reading experience. My students are eager to read, it is my hope I instill a life long love for reading with them.
