Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fifth grade at an elementary school in Illinois, where the student population is 79% low-income families and 47% of the students are English Language Learners. In an effort to help my students become good readers and successful people, I need to provide them with rich print material to model what good readers and writers think and how they dissect text in order to understand what the text is about.
I have a classroom of twenty-five, ten- and eleven-year old dual language students who need as much support as possible to survive in our globally competitive and ever-changing world.
My students are wonderful people who deserve a fair and equitable education. My students desperately need exposure to rich and diverse print material to help develop their reading and comprehension skills so they can acquire the skills they need to be successful readers, writers, and communicators.
My Project
The materials I have requested for my students will help them to understand what reading is all about. They will be exposed to rich language, powerful illustrations, and excellent examples of the components of reading. These texts will allow me, as their teacher, to model for them how to use language, illustrations, and text features to fully understand a text, which will help them to develop not only the skills which will be instrumental to their future success, but also a love of reading!
Titles like, The Very Smart Pea and the Princess and The Day the Crayons Quit, will help my students understand perspective and point of view, which is an essential skill to have in today's day and age.
The rich mentor texts you will be providing to my students will help them immensely in applying the skills that all good readers need to be successful.
