My Students
With the school year upon us, I am so excited to welcome my very FIRST group of fifth graders to my classroom! Teaching in a community that is socioeconomically disadvantaged, I want to provide my students with the resources they need to be successful, feel encouraged, and to be leaders.
Students should be able to read books they enjoy, and I hope to provide them with titles they actually WANT to read. Many of my students may struggle to gain access to materials they will need everyday, and books should not be one of those items.
My Project
As a brand new teacher I am looking forward to creating a classroom environment that encourages diversity, celebrates kindness, and is a positive place for my students to be. One way I hope to encourage these ideas is by providing my students with diverse books that represent themselves and the world around them. Children want to read books they can relate to, and are reflective of who they are, as well as those that help them gain insight to how other's live. Books often act as our sight into the rest of the world, expanding our worldview and building our empathy for others.
Although I have yet to meet my students, I want all to feel welcome in our classroom. All should feel celebrated, unique, and special. With 20+ students walking through my door each day, I want to encourage and strengthen their love for reading by providing them with books to peak their interest.
