Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students walk into the classroom full of energy, laughter, and excitement. They crave a place where they can feel comfortable and safe (a home away from home).
My students have behavior or emotional disabilities, meaning they benefit from seeing positive behavior modeled in various multicultural literature.
Seeing characters who look and act like them help students meaningfully engage with literature. This love of reading and learning will carry them through many years to come!
Alongside literature, my students need to use hands-on supplies in order to solidify their mathematics skills. Using counting collections, students will grow in the basic counting and sorting skills they will need throughout their lives.
My Project
These books will continue to build the text-rich classroom I want to create. Having a classroom library with diverse characters allows my students to see themselves in the text. All of the books I have chosen were picked with my students in mind. The story lines give my students a chance to see and reflect on positive behavior.
With this expanded library, my students will be able to read independently at their grade level.
Adding stories that reflect their stories and allow for positive role play will help my students grow as students and individuals. I hope these books will encourage a love of reading and learning that will span their life-time.
