We are the founding 5th grade class at an arts-based school. We are a mix of hard-working students from Hartford and neighboring towns. Although I have taught for many years in Hartford, this is my first year at this school.
These students are going to change the future of our world.
They deserve to have access to all the materials they need to make their 5th grade year an AMAZING success! Because they are the first 5th grade class, they could use a lot of new materials.
My Project
Students in our arts based school are provided with so many materials, like instruments and art supplies. What we really need more of are age-appropriate books!
This is the first year of 5th grade at our growing school!
In order to meet the needs of all the students, books for older children are in high demand. We would love class sets of these novels in order to help students become life-long readers.
These novels are age-appropriate and cover a variety of topics that our 5th graders should be learning about. We will be reading Wonder to develop our ability to show acceptance even when someone looks different than we expect. As we learn about Colonial America in our social studies block, we will read The Witch of Blackbird Pond to tie in what life was like right here in Connecticut during colonialization! We will hopefully be able to take a field trip to the actual Blackbird Pond at the end of the unit! Students will also be reading a class favorite, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief while also studying Greek Creation Myths in our writing block before writing their own Creation Myth. With a class set of these books, our students will be able to read together and analyze the text as a group!
