Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are such a loveable, courageous and very diverse bunch! They bring such a variety of amazing experiences, potential, and culture. Academically, they are thirsty to learn and absorb as much information as they can to prepare them for the future. Culturally, they are little ambassadors of the different communities they come from and live in. They joyously bring these experiences to school to share with others that may be different than them. As a teacher, it brings me great pride to work with such a diverse group.

My classroom comprises of approximately 75% English language learners that range anywhere from the beginning of kindergarten to end of third-grade reading levels, with approximately 63% of them currently performing below grade level.

Despite this disparity, my students persevere through the various challenges they face. I am constantly striving to provide my students with multiple avenues in which to reach their goals.

My Project

Technology provides students with a chance to access information in a way that could only be provided with another teacher or student. When resources are limited and needs are high, technology can often help fill the gaps and provide extra support to those students who need it most.

With approximately 75% of my class comprising of English language learners, my students need 6 iPads and accessories to assist in increasing English language acquisition through the use of reading and comprehension skills-based applications.

These skills are needed to thrive in our classroom and in the world.

The iPads will be used as a station during the guided reading portion of the day. With the use of the iPads, students will have access to read-aloud books and comprehension questions on that student's reading level. The applications in which students will use will also generate reporting tools for me to review and gain access on the acquisition or lack there of comprehension skills. Aside from independent reading, students could also use the iPads in partnerships with headphone splitters, increasing accessibility and available use of the technology.
