Readers Are Leaders: Creating Access to Great Books
My students need 10 collections of leveled books for our classroom library that can be taken home and read, then returned to school, in addition to books for Read-Alouds.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember having access to many books as a child, both from the library and from those purchased by your parents? Those books helped you explore your world and travel to distant lands embracing the characters and their adventures.
My student are a spirited group of second graders.
They have many interests, from Biscuit to Harry Potter. Many do not have access to a Public Library card or books that are at their reading level, other than those they read in school. Having access to books they can enjoy again and again, both in school and at home, will bring them great joy while also improving their reading ability.
My Project
Our goal is for each student to be able to take home 2-3 books each night that are at his/her "Just Right" reading level so that they can practice reading at home daily. This will not only increase the number of books read but improve their fluency as well as boost their confidence as they are tackling unfamiliar words and more and more books. Please help my students get 10 collections of leveled books for our classroom library that can be taken home and read, then returned to school, in addition to books for Read-Alouds.
My students deserve access to meaningful books that they can carry with them and read throughout the day.
I am a strong proponent of literacy being the gateway to a better education regardless of ones socio-economic class. My students truly believe that readers make leaders.
