My students come from a variety of backgrounds, from low socioeconomic to middle class. Therefore, there are a wide array of experiences in our classroom. Some good and some not so good. Fifty percent of my students are on free or reduced price lunch and are from single family homes. There is a mixture of English second language students, students with learning disabilities, hearing impaired and students with autism in my class.
However, nothing stops my students from loving school, loving their peers, and most of all... loving to learn!
Their minds are like little sponges, wanting to soak up as much knowledge as they can. However, supplies are limited to a rural elementary school in North Carolina.
My Kindergarten class is very special to me. With all the "special needs" in our classroom, there is never a negative comment about anyone. Everyone helps each other. My students are so loving and so forgiving and not yet tainted by the outside world. I really want to get them of to a good educational start. So please help us get started.
My Project
With these books, my students can have small reading group instruction. These books will allow each student to put their hands on books and actually turn the pages. If students learn to read they can achieve anything. Science and Social Studies become easier. Even math becomes easier. It will open hundreds of doors for these children to become anything or anyone they want to become.
Without books learning to read is harder.
Looking on an active board is just not the same as handling a real book. Small group instruction is the best way to teach 5 and 6 year olds to read.
