Help me give my students chart paper, markers, sharpies and post-its so that they can create their own classroom resources and materials!

My Students

I teach a population that is highly diverse and majority low income. My students are fiercely protective of their friends, family and are socially-justice minded individuals who are very attuned to issues of fairness and equality. My students are passionate, funny, beautiful and thoughtful young humans who represent a variety of experiences.

I believe their education is a powerful tool they can use to change the world.

But they face many daily challenges both inside and outside of the classroom and sometimes need support and tools to ensure their path to that education is equitable.

My Project

Student ownership of materials and resources in the classroom is key to sustaining student engagement and creating a strong classroom community. The chart paper, markers, sharpies and post-its I am requesting for my students will help them create their OWN classroom anchor charts that we can reference throughout the year. They are constantly seeing teacher created materials on the walls, which contributes to the idea of seeing the classroom as a teacher space, not a teacher AND student space. These resources will help students see themselves in our classroom space and help them see that their work is important.

The POWER in seeing their own work on the walls, not just as a class project, but as a classroom resource for our lessons, cannot be underestimated.

Students thrive when their identities and words are valued. These materials will help validate their thoughts and their experiences in a permanent and meaningful way. These student-created resources will be a stepping stone towards creating more independent, thoughtful and confident learners who recognize that their words and thinking matter.
