My students are a group of high-performing learners who have been identified as gifted and talented students. While all of the other students at the school are getting a double dose of math and reading classes, my students have the opportunity to earn high school credit by taking my Spanish class. They are intelligent, investigative and eager to explore.
Spanish class opens the door to a world outside of their blighted communities.
As members of underserved communities, they face obstacles daily that many never encounter. However, they are strong and persevere and continuously seek knowledge as a way to help them escape the cycle of poverty.
Reading is a surefire way to increase content knowledge and comprehension. According to leading Second Language Acquisition experts, reading the the target language not only increases students' vocabulary and grammar but provides them an additional mode of input.
Reading a novel in the target language will allow my students to transfer their previously acquired reading comprehension skills to a new language.
They are so eager to take in the target language from all directions and have been practicing reading short passages and articles. With a class set of novels we can dive deep into a text and use the clipboards to work in literary circles. The students will be able to acquire new vocabulary and learn grammar in context as is suggested by top SLA researchers.
