My students need books that deal with topics like Coming of Age, Peer Pressure and Relationships to spark their interest in reading and bring change in their character.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I tell my students that reading takes them to a world with absolutely no boundaries and that Reading allows us to create our own reality as we form images of the people and places that we read. Many of my students come from homes where books are not readily available and rely on my classroom books.
100% of my students in grades 9-12 are on free lunch.
Many of them are reading below grade level and need to increase their reading levels. Most of my students are male and have very little interest in reading classics, however, they are very interested in other people's stories. Most would not be able to buy a book and most don't have transportation to the local public library.
My Project
My students will use these books for independent reading and to spark conversations with me and their classmates. They will read independently, with partners and with me. I am hoping that reading books about young people that are dealing with issues that they themselves may have already encountered, or may encounter in the future, will spark their interest in and foster a value of reading within them.
I envision my students making better choices in their lives as a result of reading books about young people that are dealing with issues that they themselves may have already encountered or may encounter in the future.
I recently opened a box of books. My students all crowded around and began to request the book they wanted to read first. I have more students than I have books. I am hopeful that this project is giving my students an alternative to television and games!
