Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our passionate hidden gemstone school is full of potential and enthusiastic energy. Since returning after school closures due to COVID-19, students are even more grateful and engaged in their learning and relationships in the school setting.

Diversity at this school is among the top 5% of the district.

This school identifies as a small school, serving less than 500 students grades kindergarten through 8th grade. Minority enrollment is 73% of the student body (majority Hispanic), higher than the Arizona state average of 62% (majority Hispanic). 82% of enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Testing scores are well below the state average. The percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 13% (which is lower than the Arizona state average of 45%). The percentage of students achieving mastery in reading/language arts is 19% (lower than the Arizona state average of 44%).

My Project

As the gaps increase while students grow older, the content and curriculum expectations set by the district do not change. These curriculums provide texts that well-above most children's independent reading level. COVID-19 has vastly deepened the deficits of children. Most of our children are at least three grade levels behind - working at a 1st-grade reading level.

With these texts, students will be able to access the content as expected in the district curriculum and be able to read them independently.

They will be used in small groups with me (the teacher) to help guide students at their level AND continue to maintain fidelity to grade-level curriculum and content.
