My students are inquisitive and thoughtful. In art classes we learn about the Elements of Art and Art History, and we make our own art, but we also learn to share, to collaborate, and to speak tactfully to each other about our creations. We are a community. Our school serves 7th and 8th graders who range from 11-14 years old. We are a racially diverse, inner city school where 76% of students are English Language Learners. Our population consists of 84% low-income students. 9% of our students are homeless, and 27% are special education students. Eighty-five percent of our students function with 3-4 risk factors including poverty, homelessness, single parent families, domestic violence, gangs, learning disabilities, and being a racial minority.
My Project
My students draw in a sketchbook at the beginning of each class. It helps students transition from traditional school subjects to the type of learning that happens in art. I have developed many sketch ideas but I came across several of these books in a bookstore and was blown away by how helpful they will be with student drawings.
I know the ideas held within these books will inspire my middle schoolers to create art with enthusiasm.
I am also developing an art classroom library. This is incredibly helpful in classrooms with widely differing skills. Students that are more advanced and eager to go further can dive into art ideas through reading. An art classroom library is also helpful for when students break/hurt their writing arm because they can still participate in art, just in a different form.
