Nothing beats sitting upright in a chair on a Friday afternoon reading a good book. If you don't believe me, ask my 10th graders!
My students are loud, opinionated, and run me in circles with their enthusiasm and ideas.
My school is the epitome of diversity, with many of my students originating from other countries, and many students will be the first of their family to attend college.
My Project
Since the original project, many of previously disinterested students have discovered the joys of independent reading. Our classroom library has grown to about 25 books and more students are asking, "Miss, can we just read today? I want to finish Matched."
I am a strong advocate for independent/self-directed reading. I use the novels in my classroom teach the curriculum, but also, to inspire a love for reading and creative writing in my students.
Instilling an interest and eventual appreciation for literature is a very daunting task. Most of my students have never been introduced to books outside of the classroom but, when reading excerpts or summaries, express interest in independent reading. My classes and I would like to continue organizing our classroom library with a wide variety of genres and accessibility in order to appeal to the students' diverse interests and begin the creative writing process on iPads in a comfortable and student-decorated area of the classroom.
My students will have the opportunity to nurture their budding interest in contemporary literature while also having access to classic pieces and many independent authors.
Many can be downloaded for free through the use of the iPads and with the available technology I can also have my students begin writing their own stories and jot down common themes as they read. My classes can also design and decorate a "Reading Corner" which will add to both their enthusiasm for reading and creativity.
