I teach in a school district where our families come from a wide range of economic backgrounds. District-wide, all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. While many of our children come to school with all they could possibly need, as a district, a great many of our students come to school without basic supplies and our classrooms lack many standard resources due to lack of district funding. Technology, in particular, is an area that I am especially passionate about and is terribly underfunded in our district.
Despite the challenges some of our students experience daily, they still come to school every day excited and ready to learn.
When many of our students come to us, the average performance level in both reading and math is several grade levels below where our students ideally would be. Because of these challenges, I am always looking for new, innovative tools to help challenge our students to succeed. Help me meet these challenges head-on and be the resource our students and teachers deserve despite the funding issues we face.
Creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills are vital in the classroom, yet most of today's scripted curriculums leave these important themes out. Learning to code allows students to use their creativity and critical thinking skills. Learning how to program with robots allows students an additional way to be creative and innovative.
Computer coding and robotics with a focus on engineering and STEM are more important than ever in our elementary classrooms.
This is why I am asking for the Botley Coding Robot classroom kit, other fabulous robotics, and coding kits and a classroom library of award-winning STEM trade books to introduce my students to beginning robotics and coding. Learning coding and robotics skills give my students opportunities to gain interests in Science, Technology, and Engineering job fields.
