I work with K-3rd grade students in reading. At our school, we do not have diverse ethnic groups, but we do work with a variety of ability levels.
They have many interests and varying reading ability levels.
Some students come to school having already mastered letter names and sounds and are reading above grade level while others come in not knowing any letter names and sounds. We have 2nd graders who are non-readers and then some that are reading at a 6th-grade level. It is my job to find a way to meet the reading needs of multiple students that range from non-reader to well above grade level. These kids are motivated and are very excited to gain knowledge, develop new reading skills and read to learn.
My Project
We are in need of Rebus Readers for our beginning readers as well as more 2-3 grade classic books like Stuart Little and Frindle to add to our Dyad Reading Library. These books will be used in all grade levels for our school wide dyad reading program. We have volunteers that read one on one with students as well as nine classrooms who have implemented dyad reading in their classrooms. We will also use these sentence strips in our volunteer dyad reading program so the students can practice fluency.
Dyad reading is a great way to encourage meaningful social interaction between students, increase fluency, develop vocabulary and enables them to practice comprehension.
We need more books in order to keep up with the demands of this effective reading program.
