Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in a suburban area of Ventura, CA. We are a diverse student body that celebrates the differences in each other. Our school promotes kindness, responsibility, and hard work.
I teach a group of 25 super sweet, smart, and squirmy second graders.
They are enthusiast about learning and devour new and exciting material. They never cease to amaze me at how quickly they pick up new technology skills taught to them (we started Google Classroom this year and we're loving it!!).
My Project
I am trying to teach my students to "read with expression," and one of the best ways to do that is to listen to expert readers. In a perfect world, every child would be read to each night from birth to late childhood. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Students are coming to school with gaps in their reading because they have not been read aloud to often enough.
Listening to audio books gives my students access to someone reading to them.
Listening to reading allows them to learn punctuation, enunciation, and emphasis. In addition, it gives them access to a larger vocabulary, improves their attention span and reading focus.
This project will add 1 iPod to my listening center, provide headphones for students to use with the iPods and our class computers, and it will add non-ficiton books to our listening center. These supplies will directly effect their literacy and give them the tools they need to "read with expression!"
