We are a small, public, charter school located in the rural town in the Sacramento Delta region. Our school family has students in grades K-6. Our students come from many communities up and down the Sacramento River, which means we serve students from a variety of backgrounds and needs. We provide services to a significant ELL (English Language Learner) population and a growing Special Education population.
When you step onto our campus, you will get a hello and a smile from everyone you see!
We remind our students daily that they are leaders and scholars who will change the world! My first graders are special because we truly are a classroom family.
My Project
Learning to read is a huge part of our first grade year. My students are working on sounding out words, identifying sights words, reading comprehension, and reading with fluency daily. One way we work on these skills is through morning center rotations. My first graders are all at different levels on their reading journey so I want to work on building up their confidence!
I believe learning to read should be FUN!
Each of these resources are hands on and engaging. They can be used in a variety of ways for my variety of readers. They will enjoy playing board games to help them sound out tricky words. They will love building sentences with giant cubes. They like puzzles so the sequencing puzzles will be a hit. Sight words are fun when you can use dry erase boards. Reading fluency can be practiced with friends through reading theater scripts.
These items will give my students the necessary practice while also providing the necessary fun that first grade should be!
